Lilongwe, Malawi. (News of South) – With over 60% of Malawi’s population being constituted by young people there was every good reason for a collective voice of aspirations of the Malawi youth to various stakeholders and duty bearers as well as the general public, and finally their manifesto has been released.
A 52 paged document has presented a number of solutions to issues which for a long time are said to be frustrating a majority of youths in Malawi which includes widespread poverty, lack of descent jobs and limited education and economic opportunities.
Speaking to News Of The South, the coordinator of Youth Decide Campaign, Dalitso Magelegele confirmed the release of the document but was quick to point out that there is a need for it to go into its popularization then implementation.
“Indeed the youth manifesto has finally come out and we shall quickly embark on its popularization then we shall be working on its implementation and that is between 2019 and 2024,” Magelegele said.
The manifesto which has dwelled much on active participation of the youth in socioeconomic endeavors has also called on the youth to vote for competent and transformative leaders at all levels during the forthcoming elections.
“The manifesto, therefore is an entry point for youth to meaningfully express their aspirations and take the subsequent citizen action to ensure responsive, accountable and inclusive governance and service delivery.
“In conclusion, I would like to invite all Malawians, political stakeholders and development partners to engage and support this youth development agenda, and for this reason the Youth Decide Campaign urges all Malawians to elect competent and transformative leaders at all levels during the elections of 21st May, 2019.
“As a campaign, we are determined to provide responsible leadership in advancing the realization of the aspirations outlined in this Youth Manifesto,” reads the message from Youth Decide Campaign team leader Charles Kajoloweka.
The Youth of Malawi have for a long time been told to be the future leaders’ while being used by politicians mainly in violent political activities and later dumped jobless waiting for another political campaign.
Meanwhile it has already been noticed that the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the United Transformation Movement (UTM) have already adapted to the Youth Manifesto.
