Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-Former State Procurement Board chairperson Charles Kuwaza, who has been facing five counts of fraud involving over $1 million, has allegedly committed suicide by throwing himself out of a building.

According to eyewitnesses Kuwaza, who led the SPB from September 2001 to November 2015, threw himself out of the Rotary Club office building in the CBD on Tuesday afternoon and died on landing.

Pictures are already circulating on social media with the prostrate body lying covered by a blue cloth.

Last month he was arrested on charges of embezzling over $US1 million and ZW$2,5 billion during his tenure as the head of the SPB but immediately fell seriously sick leading to Magistrate Mr Elisha Singano to hold remand hearings at Metropolitan Clinic where he was admitted.

According to prosecutors, Kuwaza engaged in criminal activities to the prejudice of the state after a state audit carried out by the OPC special audit unit.

Amongst some of the allegations Kuwaza received on behalf of the SPB a donation of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number AAV 0184 from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

Instead of handing over the vehicle to the SPB he converted it to his own use. He also acted contrary to his duties by ordering SPB’s payroll officers not to deduct Pay As You Earn from his taxable benefits.

This resulted in Zimra garnishing SPB’s accounts a total of $869 820 as recovery of the untaxed benefits.
