The Minister of State for Masvingo Province Kudakwashe Bhasikiti says government must increase maize importation from Zambia to curb food shortages currently hitting the region.
Masvingo which is located in the country’s climatic region five was hit by serious dry spells last season resulting in crop failure thereby triggering food shortages and more than 300 000 people are in need of food aid.
Speaking to Star FM news recently, Minister Bhasikiti called for government to import more maize from Zambia to provide relief to villagers who are on the verge of starvation.
“We hope that government is going to intensify food importation from Zambia to rescue affected families,” said Bhasikiti.
Chiefs in Masvingo are even calling for President’s intervention for food assistance.
Masvingo has been receiving poor rains in the past years and most farmers are now relying on drought tolerant crops like sorghum and rapoko.
