News of the South HARARE – MDC- Alliance leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa joined the rest of the nation in mourning internationally acclaimed music legend Dr Oliver Mtukudzi whose death has disturbed the whole world. The death of the musician, philanthropist, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Southern Africa has seen extreme political rivals in troubled Zimbabwe coming together in mourning with Joyce Mujuru also going to pay her respects at Dr Mtukudzi’s home. Chamisa expressed grief over Dr Mtukudzi’s death pouring out his heart over the relationship he had with the late great icon. “To me a father and counsellor. To the nation, an advisor and ambassador to generations. To the world, a peace icon, a bundle of talent, calabash of wisdom. You gave your all to us all. You consoled, counselled and entertained Zimbabwe and beyond. You will be sorely missed Samanyanga,” lamented Chamisa. The youthful leader went on to echo the voices of people in saying Tuku deserves hero status. “That the people’s legend, Oliver Mtukudzi is a People’s HERO is beyond deliberation. For such a plain fact, we mere mortals can only acknowledge as we all hereby do. That he is a HERO is not because he has passed on but because he always was, even before his final rest,” he said. President Emmerson Mnangagwa sent a letter of condolence to the Tuku family describing him as an ambassador of the nation. “An international icon, the late Dr. Mtukudzi has been our cultural ambassador throughout his illustrious musical career, raising our national flag high wherever he went to perform here at home, on the African continent and throughout the world.
“He was an expression of Zimbabwean identity, a man of humble character, very affable and engaging in his own unique way through Tuku music.
“On behalf of the government, the party Zanu PF, my family and indeed, on my own behalf, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to the Mtukudzi family, especially his wife, Daisy, and the children, during this their dark hour of grief. May they derive comfort from the knowledge that the arts world in particular and our nation as a whole, share their deep pain and great loss.”
