(News Of The South) – South African president Jacob Zuma has announced that he has ordered an inquiry into beleaguered National Prosecuting Authority boss Mxolisi Nxasana.
Zuma’s spokesman Mac Maharaj confirmed the probe Saturday. “President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of the National Prosecuting Authority Act and after careful consideration of all the matters
before him, decided to institute an enquiry into the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Mxolisi Nxasana,” Maharaj said.
The spokesman would not say if Nxasana would be suspended to facilitate the investigation.
Nxasana was appointed by Zuma in August 2013 as the NPA’s first substantive head since 2007 when Vusi Pikoli was suspended for insubordination.
Government sources said Nxasana was denied clearance after he failed to disclose a 1985 murder in Umlazi near Durban when he was 18.
Nxasana maintains he was acquitted of the murder charge and says the issue was being raised by NPA rivals and factions within the ANC.
Nxasana practiced as a lawyer in Zuma’s KwaZulu-Natal home province and served as chairperson of the Black Lawyers Association before his appointment.
