On April 8, 2020, the National Coordinator for Zimbabwe Together (ZIT), Ms. Precious Musarurwa urged the Zimbabwe security sector not to tire but accelerate efforts to safeguard all living beings in Zimbabwe, by ensuring peace & order at the fruits and vegetable markets and extreme stay at home measures everywhere.
“Now is a time for unified responsive approaches against the deadly epidemic by city fathers and community focal persons in various sectors of influence. They hold a responsibility to monitor and spearhead sensitization on prevention and the devastating effects of Covid 19, in our respective communities and towns” said Musarurwa.
Musarurwa who spoke to News of The South highlighted that Covid – 19 was no longer a secret as awareness world over has reached many. Radio and television, social media have and are playing major role in the spread of information about the virus. However a cause for concern is raised in our Zimbabwe peri-urban and rural communities where production of daily products entails going into fields and gardens in numbers without protection in most instances, as well as crowding of market places where these products are released.
“If we cannot avoid the reality that we depend on Agriculture produce daily, then we ought to further our responsibility towards safeguarding ours and family lives in an extremely huge way. Social distancing, maintaining clean environments and personal hygiene are major factors which if not exercised would result in the spread of this dreadful virus throughout the world, Zimbabwe included. It is prudent for all Zimbabweans to take hid as this pandemic is real".
We acknowledge that the Zimbabwe economic stature is supported by an informal sector and this kind of situation has brought many businesses and individual efforts to the ground as some businesses have been put to halt. Many are yet to find ways of survival under such conditions where one does not have to be physically there to deliver a service. The hardest time of our generation indeed. It then becomes the responsibility of our government to consider and ensure effective responsive approaches to attend to the daily physical needs like food and shelter for those without.
“Over a million people are in need of food aid and we urge the Zimbabwe government to realize the pricing and inflation levels we are in, against its contributions to keep many alive and safe until the lockdown is over. We appreciate the demand is huge. Not only government but all of us included have the responsibility to ensure our relatives, neighbours, friends including strangers are assisted in any way possible during this time”.
“We may choose to ignore the potential consequences as of now, but let our love for our country to see our children grow give us the strength to take precaution now, and not live to regret in tragedy when our generation is wiped away by this virus for we would have failed to hid the demands of this time” added Musarurwa.
