Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, has survived a vote of no confidence against him at a meeting of his party’s top leadership.
Zuma who has been facing growing criticism within the ruling African National Congress is said to have defeated the motion on Sunday.
The motion was brought by a senior ANC member at the weekend’s National Executive Committee meeting.
It’s the second time in six months that Zuma has survived an open revolt from within his organisation.
It’s now unlikely his party will vote against him in a motion of no confidence in Parliament.
The 75 year old leader is also facing mounting pressure from opposition parties and civil society which sharpened after a March cabinet reshuffle.
Various attempts by the opposition to push through the motion against Zuma has failed as the ANC used its majority in the National Assembly to block such a move.
