A 30 year old Nigerian man who named his pet dog after President Muhammadu Buhari who he claims is his hero has been arrested for breach of the peace.

Joe Fortemose Chinakwe painted the name on both sides of the animal as he walked his pet in an area where support for the president was high, police said.

Nigerian police officers said they were worried as the move could antagonise people, though Chinakwe insisted it was meant as a compliment.

He remains in custody as money for his bail is still not available.

Chinakwe, said that he named the dog Buhari because he had admired the newly-elected president for many years.

“I named my beloved pet dog Buhari, who is my hero,” Chinakwe said. “My admiration for Buhari started far back when he was a military head of state.”

He later told local media he had received death threats over the misunderstanding.
