A Zimbabwean woman has once again placed Zimbabwe on the global fashion map after winning the Best Dressed Woman award at the prestigious 2026 Lux Afrique Polo Day in the United Kingdom.
The winner, Tandy Mpala, captivated judges with a breathtaking outfit that celebrated Zimbabwean culture, creativity and sustainability. The award marks her second Best Dressed Woman title at Lux Afrique Polo Day, having also claimed the honour in 2024.
The striking ensemble was the result of a collaboration between three Zimbabweans based in the UK. The elegant dress was designed by Pride Mnkandla, while the spectacular oversized headpiece was created by Sindisiwe Ndlovu.
The outfit featured the iconic Zimbabwe Bird, proudly showcasing the nation’s heritage, while the dramatic handcrafted hat was made using cardboard, foam, red fabric, beads and feathers before being enhanced with additional feathers to create a regal finish. The combination of traditional symbolism, contemporary fashion and recycled materials impressed judges and guests alike.
Speaking after receiving the award, Tandy Mpala said wearing the outfit filled her with pride.
“Wearing this outfit gave me confidence and pride as I represented Zimbabwean culture on an international platform.”
She said the award was not just a personal achievement but recognition of Zimbabwean creativity, heritage and the talent of the designers behind the winning look.
Designer Sindisiwe Ndlovu admitted she never imagined that a hat she created from everyday materials would end up on one of Africa’s most prestigious luxury fashion stages.
“I was honestly shocked when I saw the photos. To see something I made from cardboard, paired with a dress celebrating our Zimbabwean heritage, win at Lux Afrique is surreal. Tandy wore it like royalty.”
The victory has been widely celebrated by Zimbabweans in the diaspora, with many praising the trio for using fashion to promote Zimbabwean identity on an international stage. The success has also sparked conversations about sustainable fashion and the growing influence of African designers in the global luxury industry.
