South African President Jacob Zuma has defended coach Gordon Igesund and his technical department following heavy criticism from sport minister who branded the hosts as “useless and a bunch of losers” after their early exit from African Nations Championship.
South Africa won a single match against their northen neighbours Mozambique before settling for a 1-1 draw against Mali and a 3-1 loss to the Super Eagles of Nigeria which led to their sports minister Fikile Mbalula denigrating them.
Nevertheless, president Zuma has supported Gordon Igesund’s team saying that he is the right man for Bafana Bafana.
“The fact that the team lost, that doesn’t mean anything as other teams lost as well,” he told SAfm.
“Some want the team disbanded. It has improved greatly and needs support.”
“We are well aware that some people are criticising the way the national team played against Nigeria,” he continued.
“The current coach knows what he’s doing. He’s great at his job.”
South Africa crushed out of African Nations Championships following their 3-1 defeat to Nigeria on Sunday, a development that sparked wide spread criticism for the National team.
