Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police force have been warned that the force will not hesitate to weed out bad elements involved in acts of corruption as they are tarnishing the image of the force to the public, it has been learnt.

Addressing senior police officers at the Manicaland province belated end of year party on Friday Deputy Commissioner General (Crime) Josephine Shambare said the force deplores and abhors any corruption within its rank and file.

“I want to state that the organisation will continue to take stern action against police officers who in contrast to the dictates of the organisation’s values and ethics engage in corrupt activities. If any of you becomes a participant to corruption then you should always be aware that you will be caught some day,” warned DCG Shambare.

DCG Shambare reiterated that fighting crime was the core business of the Zimbabwe Republic Police and therefore criminals should not be given any breathing space to create safe havens for their selfish gains.

The police boss expressed disappointment at the sudden increase of crime such as rape of juveniles, unlawful entry and theft of motor vehicles when compared to last year’s statistics.

She added that time had come for the police and members of the public to join hands and make a bold stance in reprimanding these uncouth elements that are heartlessly destroying innocent lives and the future generation.

“What is particularly disappointing is the increase in crimes such as rape of juveniles which increased by 5 per cent, unlawful entry by 9 percent and theft of motor vehicles by 13 per cent in 2013, when compared to the same period in 2012.

“It is disheartening to note that cases of rape (juvenile) remain prevalent. While countless calls for this cruel tide continue to go unheeded time has come for us as a nation to make bold stance against these uncouth elements that are heartlessly destroying innocent lives and the future of the young generation,” said Shambare.

DCG Shambare said police had a duty to ensure that people in their various communities were safe and able to conduct their business without fear of crime.
