Zollywood(Zimbabwean Movies) on Vox Africa Sky 218, Dstv 191 , Gotv16

Like Nollywood, Bollywood and the famously known Hollywood, Zimbabawe has its very own Zollywood, an idea Tony Mliswa and Thulani Matsvimbo came up with after realizing that there was more emphasis on Nigerian films than Zimbabwean films in the U.K (Diaspora).

There is basically no outlet for Zimbabwean films in the Diaspora. So Tony Mliswa and Thulani Matsvimbo decided to embark on a project to expose the Zimbabwean Film Industry.

‘Zimbabwean people in the Diaspora got accustomed to watching Nigerian films, Nollywood because there was nothing else African to watch . Also people in the Diaspora were suffering from nostalgia and they wanted something that would bring them closer to home’, Mliswa said.

In 2011 Mliswa went to Zimbabwe and managed to meet up with a lot of the local filmmakers and in March 2012 Premiered ‘The Gentleman ‘ staring Munyaradzi Chidzonga and Presley Chiweneyegae (TSOTSI), in London Leciester Square at the Prince Charles Cinema.

Mliswa and Sylvia Chimhina producer the movie Tsotsi and that really had a great response and really exposed the Zimbabwean film industry to Zimbabweans in the UK In July 2012.

They also managed to have another movie produced by Demetria Karongah ‘The In laws’ Premiered at Bedfordshire University.

In 2013 their movies were also aired on Klear TV, sky232. This year 2014 Zollywood managed to cut a deal with Vox Africa channel SKY 218 – UK , Africa- DSTV 191 / GOTV 16 / ZUKU 140 launching every Sunday at 8.00 p.m. The schedule for Zollywood films for June 2014 is as follows:

Every Sunday @8.00p.m or 9.00p.m there will be a Zimbabwean film showing on Vox Africa.

Zollywood also managed to cut a deal with MNET Africa Magic Movie Channels DSTV South Africa in MAY 2013 and the following movies are currently showing ‘The Gentleman, Sores Of Emmanuel, Lobola and City Of Dreams.

Zollywood`s main objective is to really expose the Zimbabwean Film Industry locally and Internationally and that will hopefully propel the Zimbabwean Film Industry to be recognized not only by Zimbabweans but by other African countries, all over the world to spread Zimbabwean culture and at the same time Zimbabwean Tourism.

Zimbabwe has so much talent and it will be shown off to other countries. It is hoped that the Zimbabwean Film Industry will grow and this exposure will entice Zimbabwean Companies to sponsor some of these movies and get brand awareness and this why the Zimbabwean Film Industry needs funding.

“Zollywood is all about promoting the Zimbabwean films just as the Nigerians have done with Nollywood. The aim is to bring film producers together and market local films under one umbrella.

“We want to get our directors together to form a more united movie industry. An industry that will assist each other in making and marketing our films internationally. We also want to cut out piracy so the money invested by filmmakers goes back to them to produce more films” said Mliswa.
At the moment fans can watch Gringo Trouble Maker, Think, Sores Of Emmanuel, Lobola, Yellow Card, More Time, Sinners, Tale in a Box and many more online pay per view or digital downloads via the Zollywood website www.zollywoodzim.co.uk.

The money goes back to the filmmakers so they can keep producing more movies as they are working on low budget movies and as long as people buy the movies there will be more movies produced.

The filmmakers are doing their best with the little they have. Filmmakers in the Diaspora are being encouraged to start producing films, short and long films and in Zimbabwe for filmmakers to shoot their films in nice places, showing off our tourism and beautiful country.

Films should also be produced in English for the international market or if one wants to be authentic they can subtitle the film.

Zollywood aims to compete with the International market and hope to improve and expose the Zimbabwean film industry more and set up the next generation of filmmakers.
