0 0Harare, Zimbabwe(News of the South)-Government has crafted a business package called the Pioneer Investor Status to attract investors into the country as President Mnangagwa strains to achieve tangible results past the 100 days benchmark.
The package was unveiled by Chairman of the Special Economic Zone Board Dr Gideon Gono during a presentation read on his behalf by Mr Hove at the ongoing London Investment Conference at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Dr Gono said the aim of the government is to offer benefits to investors who move first to invest in the country.
“The term Pioneer Column is part of our history back home when in 1890 Cecil John Rhodes led what was to be known as the Pioneer Column to occupy our country.”
“Today we come here to invite a different form of Pioneer Column. We are going to be putting together a package of extra-ordinary incentives that will apply to all new investors who will choose Zimbabwe as their investment destination between now and the next 1000 days to December 31 2020.
“Such investors, exceeding certain minimum thresholds to be announced soon, shall enjoy Pioneer Investor Status commensurate with the first mover benefits necessary to create the investor momentum that we wish to see in a new Zimbabwe that is open for business,” he said.
The former Reserve Bank Governor said their aim is to draw investors from across the world.
“The main difference between the 1890 Pioneer Column and the one I’m talking about is that one is open to investors from all corners of the globe, North, South, East and the West,” he said.
The government has been on an investor hunting overdrive since President Mnangagwa got into power swerving from the previous Mugabe administration’s isolated and mainly East looking stance.
The move has however been criticized by some who see it as a weak and inadequate approach to the decades old rot that has set into the country.
