As Zimbabwe enthusiastically prepares for its upcoming independence celebrations, a dark cloud hangs over the festivities. The remains, specifically the heads, of Zimbabwean heroes who were beheaded while bravely fighting for the nation’s freedom during the colonial era, remain in museums across England and Scotland. This deeply troubling situation raises serious questions about the true meaning of independence and national pride for Zimbabweans.

Many Zimbabweans are unaware that the skulls of their ancestors, who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of their country, are still held in foreign institutions. This lack of awareness further complicates the issue, as there is no widespread public outcry or demand for their return. How can a nation truly celebrate its freedom while the physical remains of its fallen heroes are treated as mere artifacts in distant lands?

The government’s recent claim of lacking $30,000 USD to conduct a national combined bira, a traditional ceremony to seek guidance on the repatriation process, adds another layer of concern. This seems contradictory, especially considering that a budget of the same amount was reportedly presented to the minister in August 2024. The next crucial step involves Zimbabwean traditional leaders and the descendants of the beheaded heroes traveling to London to conduct another traditional ceremony before any concrete plans for the return of the remains can be made.

The apparent reluctance or inability of the government to allocate funds for this culturally and historically significant process is deeply concerning. It suggests a disconnect between the celebration of independence and the honoring of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to achieve it. How can the spirits of these heroes “rest” peacefully, as President Mnangagwa himself acknowledged, when their remains are thousands of miles away from their homeland?

This situation highlights a significant void in Zimbabwe’s journey towards complete liberation. True independence encompasses not only political freedom but also the reclamation of cultural heritage and the dignified return of ancestral remains. The continued presence of these skulls in foreign museums serves as a constant reminder of colonial subjugation and disrespect for Zimbabwean traditions.

It is imperative for Zimbabweans to become more aware of this issue and for the government to prioritize the repatriation of these ancestral remains. A national dialogue, involving traditional leaders, families, and the wider public, is crucial to foster a collective understanding and demand for action. Only when the remains of these heroes are returned to their rightful place and accorded the respect they deserve can Zimbabwe truly celebrate its independence with a clear conscience and a sense of closure. The upcoming independence celebrations should serve as a catalyst for renewed efforts to bring the ancestors home and honor their sacrifice in a meaningful and tangible way.
