Harate. – President Mnangagwa has followed, South African President Ramaphosa, lock stock and barrel by declaring a lockdown for 21 days with effect from March 30, 2020. While this is welcome, it has been taken abruptly, without adequate plans to guarantee supply of basic commodities, avert starvation and ensure success.
While the decisive action to avert coronavirus pandemic is welcome, without adequate planning, inclusive programmes and harnessing of resources to guarantee success, the whole exercise remains hap-hazard meddling and muddling through. With the majority of Zimbabweans testing positive to poverty, starvation wages of workers, and rampant food insecurity, it remains to be seen how the Zimbabweans would navigate the 21 days without serious suffering.
Teachers in particular are virtually broke and the lockdown is like heaping burning coals upon their heads.
