The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has increased the prices of electricity tariffs by 19 percent, effective March 1st 2020.
This means that the first 50 units of electricity for the month which used to cost ZWL$20.50 will now cost ZWL$24.50.
150 units which used to cost ZWL$136.50 now cost ZWL$162.00. 200 units which were previously pegged at ZWL$157 are now at ZWL$186.50.
After 200 units have been consumed, all other units will now go for ZWL$4.61 per kWh from ZWL$3.87 per kWh.
“ZETDC has adjusted the electricity tariffs by 19.02 percent. This is in accordance with the Tariff Award of 2 October 2019, which approved the implementation of monthly tariff indexation formula, that takes into account the movement of the macroeconomic fundamentals such as exchange rate and inflation, for changes above 10 percent,” read a statement from ZETDC.
Zimbabwe requires 1 800MW, but is currently generating less than 1 000MW which has seen the country going for erratic load-shedding which lasts up to 18 hours in some parts of the country.
State owned power company, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is currently owing Mozambique’s Electricidade de Mocambique and Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (EDM) and South Africa’s Eskom US$70 million.
