Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has called for the primary and secondary education ministry to close schools to protect students and teachers from contracting covid-19 infection.
Since the opening of schools, quite a number of schools have closed due to covid-19 cases increase, students testing positive almost every week and this brought mixed feelings amongst parents as some wish for the schools to be shutdown whilst some want children in school.
The government had laid down the issue of schools being shut down again by insisting that all pre- requisite measures to protect students and teachers are in place but with how schools are shutting down, a change of strategy is needed.
Meanwhile, a few days ago two schools, Waddilove and Goromonzi High School in Mashonaland Province recorded a combined number of 52 cases, leaving the rest of the students at these schools at a higher risk of contracting the virus if strict measures are not followed.
PTUZ President Takavafira Zhou notes that, “It is dangerous for the government to claim that cases are minimal and alright when it has no capacity to test all teachers, students and ancillary stuff.”
Currently it might be difficult for schools to close as some have started writing their final exams and what’s left is to keep following the covid-19 preventive guidelines in order to curb the spread of virus in respective areas.
