Precious Musarurwa, the national coordinator for Zimbabwe Together expressed concerns that with a likely extension of time under lockdown the rise in the number of domestic violence cases recorded in Zimbabwe meant many people were not safe.

“Whilst we are approaching the end of the second week towards reducing covid 19, new infections we are also manifesting an old trend that possibly has much negative impact on our families future” said Musarurwa.

Children and relatives are recording violence in homes and sending did messages through friends and relatives. The lockdown means people are not able to go to the police and public areas where they can seek refuge for a short while. They are now stuck in the house with the abusers. On the other hand there isn’t enough awareness raised on domestic violence and what people can do to get help, it’s devastating effects during this period will see it’s way into the future.

"I remind this nation coronavirus automatically forced us into a different lifestyle never imagined. Our capacity to handle relations is tested. Measures that address our current social status are required from the law enforcers, non-profit making, arts, and members of our society who can" added Musarurwa.

“My concern is much of the abusers who are likely going to be psychologically influenced and continue, if justice does not catch up immediately. It is the mentality that no one and nothing will happen to me that might increase probability of continued violence. What of the children watching this violence unfold?”.

Musarurwa also said “We are all in this together and our failure is the next generation’s timebomb. Parents are disrespecting each other and my heart goes to the watchers, our children. It’s painful to think of the psychological impact on these children. As someone who was once in a violent relationship, I urge women and men to respect the vows they committed to and those young ones stuck with them until God knows when. Failure is the likely breaking down of family unity”.

The devastating effect of domestic violence clearly destroys value of fatherhood and motherhood in weaker parents. It also increases divorce rates and heart breaks. We are in the end of times and a lot of things are happening world wide. It takes the right mind to realise these changes require all key players in families to be positively active and being counted as our children are looking up to us”.

Musarurwa urges families to be calm, find each other, find joy in indoor activities that accommodate every member of the family, help each other on daily chores, keep the children on their toes in terms of their school work, plan the future, laugh, eat together, exercise and love more.
