Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – 2020 marks forty years anniversary for Zimbabwean Independence. As we grow a few steps closer to Independence we get to look at how Zimbabwe is now and how it was before it got it’s independence.
We get to reflect on life in the past and how things have changed, whether it is to our advantage or if things were better before Zimbabwe was independent.
Paying jobs were meant to be done by men whilst women stayed at home taking care of the children and doing house chores such as cleaning and cooking. With the coming of Zimbabwean Independence women are now also able to compete and get the same jobs that men are doing. Women were marginalised when it came to jobs.
There also were schools that were specifically for the white and those that accommodated whites only. There were grouo A and group B schools. The group B schools were specifically for bkack children. The children were not allowed to be at the same institutions. Private schools were reserved for the whites and public schools were filled up with black children. When Zimbabwe got its independence things started slowly as black children could also now be able to get into private schools. As of today both white and black children can attend whichever school they want to.
In the music industry it were the men who were mostly dominant. The women would be there possibly as the backup singers or will not be there at all. Gospel Music was performed by men but as the country got it’s independence things started to change for the better.
Female Musicians such as Fungisai Zvakavapano Mashavave, Shingisai Siluma among other female musicians were now able to be in the music industry as well. Till today they are performing very well and also getting to outshine some of the men in the music industry.
Prisons just like schools were meant for different races. There were some that were specifically meant for the blacks and those meant for the whites, if any. As time went on and Zimbabwe got independent things changed and these jails could now be shared by both races depending on the place ta which the crime that you committed was. People who committed crimes and be of different races could now be in the same jails which is something that could not happen before Zimbabwe got its Independence.
So as the April 18, 2020 gets close people should start commemorating and reflecting on the past and appreciating the independence that we have and get ready to celebrate as a nation, 40 years of independence.
