Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) -383 000 Zimbabweans and counting are still waiting for their passports which they applied for, with some from as far back as 2018.
The southern African country has been struggling to issue passports due to lack of funds. This has relatively seen the government issuing 60 passports a day.
Many Zimbabweans have been left in limbo as a result of the situation. However, it seems as if it’s about to rain for the prospective passport holders.
Registrar General Clemence Masango, has since painted a positive outlook towards the issue of passports.
“Materials have started to come into the country and as of now we are doing 2 000 passports a day. It will take time but please bear with us. It will take time to finish the backlog.
1 000 is for urgent passports applications and the other 1 000 goes towards addressing the backlog.
We prioritise citizens in the diaspora because we have no choice. We are aware that if one is not properly documented they risk being arrested and deported.
We are also giving priority to government and businesses as well as those with critical medical conditions,” hinted the Registrar General.
Many Zimbabweans have been forced to cross the borders illegally as a result of the chaotic system.
