JOHANNESBURG. (News Of The South) -The South Africa Reserve Bank (SARB) on Saturday confirmed that Zimbabwean authorities have released the plane with their consignment.
The plane was impounded after a dead body was found aboard the plane carrying the South African Central Bank consignment. Pradeep Maharaj, the SARB group executive, currency cluster confirmed that they have received their consignment intact. He said, “The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) can confirm that the consignment of South African currency on the plane that landed in Harare earlier this week, has arrived in the country and is safe in the control of the SARB. The SARB cooperated with both the Zimbabwean and South African authorities in securing the release of the consignment.”
He also said the American cargo jet was carrying the South African Bank’s money. Maharaj said some of the money is produced overseas while some are produced in the country in order to cater for major disruptions in the country’s money production. Maharaj also said, “In order to achieve this and to ensure that contingency plans are robust and regularly tested, a small percentage of the SARB’s annual banknote order is outsourced to credible and vetted international printing companies. The bulk of South African currency is produced at its wholly owned subsidiary, the South African Banknote Company.”
The American registered cargo jet had stopped in Harare to re-fuel when the Zimbabwean officials noticed some blood. They then checked the plane and a corpse were discovered resulting in the plane and consignment being impounded. It was being heavily guarded by the soldiers in Zimbabwe. News of the South could not ascertain how far the Zimbabwean authorities had gone with their investigations.
