Harare, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) launched its own website, www.zrp.gov.zw as it seeks to remain relevant and vigilant in the wake
of sustained criminal activities on cyberspace.
In a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner Magejo (Administration), Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri said the hosting of the website has become cardinal in building synergies with the public through an improved access to policing information.
“The use of information technology has become a part of everyday life in the 21st century and criminals are never waiting for us police to be in touch with these developments but are manipulating every available opportunity to utilize the virtual and extra-territorial nature of cyber-space”.
“It is thus my candid conviction that this development will go a long way in improving out performance as we strive to achieve the best results in discharging the constitutional mandate that we were given by the people of our motherland”, he said.
Chihuri said this had created a need for technological response from them.
“The website shall provide a forum for people to send concerns and complaints on various policing issues”.
“By the same measure, the major imperative for the ZRP hosting a website is to take advantage of technological advances to improve efficiency and effectiveness”, he added.
The coming online of the ZRP dovetails with the increasing technological flexibility being exhibited by the government in its concerted efforts to fight crime and have a greater hold of the cyber field in an environment characterized by increased citizen journalism and activism through cyberspace.
Recently Information Communication Technology minister Supa Mandiwanzira submitted a draft National Information Communication Technology (ICT) policy document which if signed by President Mugabe will tighten the government’s grip on cyberspace.
