Belleville, Cape Town in South Africa (News of The South) – A massive defensive game and a flawless attack in the 2nd quarter enabled Zimbabwe’s Zimgems to brush aside Kenya 68-35 in their first game of the day at the ongoing Africa Netball cup 2019 here at the Bellville Velodrome, South Africa.
Zimbabwe went into the game as favorites against the rising East African team and made 3 changes to the team that lost to South Africa yesterday.
In first quarter The Gems played exactly like a team that is still to know each other as they haven’t camped and trained for a long time, they made some errors, lost possession and ran the wrong lines but they still managed to win the quarter 16-10.
Words from stand in coach Ropafadzo Mutsauki must have met the right ear codes as in the 2nd quarter they came back a changed team, Lorraine Manjoro who was playing Centre today started to dictate the pace of the game, Progress Moyo quickened up things in attack and Joice Takaidza made sure with her shooting hands but the hard work was done at the back with Queen Sigauke and Felisitus Kwangwa the minister of defense as she is known denied Kenya a shot for nearly 3 mins and that meant that Zimbabwe went into the halftime break leading 39-14 having won the 2nd quarter 23-4.
After the breather it was just a matter of conserving energy and game management, the coach made the changes introducing Patricia Mauladi, Tanaka Makusha and Ursula Ndlovu for Lorraine Manjoro, Queen Sigauke and Sharon Bwanali and eventually the game ended with Zim walking away 68-35 winners.
The next match is on today at 4pm as The Gems play Lesotho looking for another massive win to climb up the ladder as they are currently in 5th position having lost 2 matches of which one was that forfeited encounter against Uganda.
