Zimbabwe marked a significant step toward its digital future with the official launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2026–2030 at the New Parliament Building in Mount Hampden. The event brought together government leaders, technology experts, academics, and industry stakeholders to witness what officials described as a defining moment in the country’s technological transformation.
The strategy was launched in the presence of Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, alongside the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, who has been spearheading the country’s push toward digital innovation.
A Vision for Zimbabwe’s AI Future
The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2026–2030 outlines Zimbabwe’s roadmap for integrating artificial intelligence into national development. The framework aims to position the country as a competitive digital economy in Africa by promoting innovation, improving public services, and strengthening technological capacity.
Speaking at the launch, President Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasized that artificial intelligence is no longer a distant technological ambition but a present-day tool that can accelerate economic growth, modernize governance, and improve service delivery across sectors.
He highlighted that Zimbabwe must embrace emerging technologies to remain globally competitive, particularly in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, education, mining, and public administration.
Mavetera Champions Digital Transformation
ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera described the strategy as a blueprint for building a knowledge-based economy driven by data and innovation.
According to the minister, the policy framework focuses on several key pillars:
AI research and innovation development
Digital infrastructure and computing capacity
Skills development and AI education
Ethical and responsible AI governance
Public-private partnerships in technology
Mavetera also stressed the importance of developing local expertise in artificial intelligence, encouraging universities, research institutions, and technology hubs to collaborate in building a strong national AI ecosystem.
Strategic Location for a Digital Milestone
Holding the launch at Mount Hampden—home to Zimbabwe’s new Parliament complex—symbolized the government’s intention to anchor digital policy within national governance and long-term development planning.
The event drew participation from government officials, diplomats, technology entrepreneurs, university representatives, and youth innovators eager to explore the opportunities that artificial intelligence presents for Zimbabwe.
Opportunities Across Key Sectors
The strategy envisions the deployment of AI technologies across multiple sectors:
Agriculture: Predictive analytics for crop management and climate adaptation
Healthcare: AI-assisted diagnostics and health data management
Education: Smart learning systems and digital classrooms
Public Services: Automation and improved service delivery
Industry and Mining: Data-driven production and resource management
By integrating AI into these sectors, the government hopes to improve productivity, create new industries, and generate employment opportunities for Zimbabwe’s growing youth population.
Building a Responsible AI Ecosystem
A key aspect of the strategy is ensuring ethical and responsible AI development. Policymakers highlighted the need for regulatory frameworks that protect privacy, prevent misuse of data, and ensure transparency in AI-driven decision-making.
Officials noted that Zimbabwe aims to align its AI policies with global standards while tailoring them to local socio-economic realities.
A Turning Point for Zimbabwe’s Digital Economy
The launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy signals Zimbabwe’s ambition to become a regional leader in emerging technologies. With government backing, policy direction, and growing interest from the private sector, AI is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s future economic landscape.
As the ceremony concluded in Mount Hampden, the message from national leadership was clear: Zimbabwe intends not only to participate in the global AI revolution but to harness it for national development and innovation.
