“Zimbabwe Can Be A Manufacturing Entity”: Expert
By Almot Maqolo.
Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South) – Zimbabwe can be a manufacturing
entity as it is well endowed with a talented workforce and infrastructure in place, an expert said on Tuesday.
In a bid to protect the local industry, last year the government gazetted Statutory Instrument (SI) 64 of 2016.
It is one of the raft measures that have started paying off which removed goods that have local equivalents from the open general import licence.
The industry capacity is poised to increase by 65 percent in the near
future owing to an improved agricultural season.
Addressing delegates at the ease of doing workshop organised by the
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority held in the capital, Independent Economic and Political Analyst Daniel Silke said the country can benefit much from the underdeveloped manufacturing sector.
“You know here in this country we have talented workforce, educated workforce and infrastructure that might need some help but that if you look at it relatively right you can certainly become a manufacturing entity of this continent.
“I have seen other colleagues of African continent begin a road to diversify into manufacturing and as I always say my life particular headline in the future we really should as Africans not be buying all those goods and staff selling outside on the side box which certainly maybe China we should simply have those products made in Africa,” he said.
Silke said, “There is no reason why certain of those products not made in any one of our societies particularly in this particular region”.
Deputy Secretary to the office of the president and cabinet Dr Ray Ndhlukula said the easy of doing business programme is going to wrap in other key sectors of the economy.
“We are expanding to other sectors like manufacturing we are aware and tourism and I must say we are satisfied with the progress that we have done actually has encouraged collaboration not only the executive in government but with the legislature as well as the judicial,” he said.
