Harare, Zimbabwe.

Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) Yesterday the Harare City Council (HCC) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) raided and closed 25 butcheries for selling uninspected meat in the residential areas of Budiriro, Dzivaresekwa and Mabvuku.

The butcheries were allegedly using small quantities of the chemical (formalin) which is used to preserve corpses.

HCC communications officer, Innocent Ruwende said, “routine meat hygiene monitoring and reports from the public have revealed that there are some operators contravening sections of the Harare Meat By-Laws and the Public Health Act.

Council will not hesitate to close such businesses which do not comply with regulations. The health inspection by City Health Department, which is done when one is renewing or applying for a business licence, is an important routine procedure which helps maintain safety and health standards.”

The City Health Services Department also advised citizens to be vigilant, “council wishes to advise members of the public to be aware of uninspected, unhygienic and adulterated meat on the market in Harare and rather buy meat from licensed butcheries only.
Routine meat hygiene monitoring and reports from the public have revealed that there are contraventions with the relevant legislation and minimum hygiene standards in the sale of meat in Harare. Such meat is unsafe and unfit for human consumption.”

Some of the butcheries were allegedly using formalin to get around the problem of 18 hour power cuts that have affected the city for the past few months.
