Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) – (News of the South) – Government on Monday appointed an 11-member Special Economic Zones Board aimed at stimulating investment inflows through unlocking all operations in established
special economic zones (SEZs).

Established on SEZs, which are governed by special rules, different
from the rest of the economy, was mooted in hopes of reversing the death in foreign direct investment in the country in the past decade.

To date, three SEZs have been set up in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, Dr Gideon Gono chairs the
board and is deputized by Sithandile Ngwenya.

Other Board members include Retired Brigadier General, Godfrey Chanakira, Ozias Machaya Hove, Erasmus Gapara, Constance Zhanje, Edwin Zvandasara, Christopher Dube, Mary Mubaiwa, Busisa Moyo and Brigadier General Thando Madzvamuse.

Macro- Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister, Obert Mpofu said the appointment was triggered by a decreasing investment space as foreign direct investment inflows continue on a downward trend.

“It is sad to note the negative statistics but the country is
presented with an opportunity for economic transformation, growth and
development through the implementation of SEZs,” Mpofu said.

“These SEZs are expected to stimulate investment inflows from the domestic and international markets into strategic sectors of the economy.”

SEZs board chairperson, Dr Gideon Gono urged Zimbabweans in the Diaspora to also participate and develop the economy through investing in the special economic zones.

“The challenge is upon us Zimbabweans to go all out and promote investment into SEZs. Those Zimbabweans in the Diaspora should seize this opportunity to get involved in serious productive activities back home.
