Harare, Zimbabwe. – The GRAIN Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) is set to deliver 80 000 metric tonnes of maize on a monthly basis.
“We have mobilized resources and logistics to bring these tonnages of maize to adequately meet the high market demand.
GMAZ and its members are now in full swing working on an import program to bring in 80 000 metric tonnes per month for milling.
The government has put in place key enablers for the importation program and they are also working out the new subsidy level on this imported grain.
GMAZ and its entire membership remain committed to the noble idea of availing affordable staple food to the populace of Zimbabwe,” said GMAZ’s deputy chairperson Chipo Nheta.
A combination of government dysfunction, an economic meltdown, droughts and a calamitous cyclone this past March have hurtled Zimbabwe toward a hunger disaster that has become the most severe in southern Africa.
Last month, the ministry of trade and industry established a taskforce that is meant to ensure transparent and equitable distribution of mealie-meal.
Government pegged the price of a 10kg bag of mealie-meal at $50 (US2.50) but due to manmade shortages, the mealie-meal is now mostly found in the black market for between $100 (US$5) and $200 (US$10).
