Zim DCG Shambare Speaks On RENAMO Resurgence
By Martin Muleya
Zimbabwean Police in Manicaland have been warned not to sit on their laurels especially with the resurgence in the neighbouring Mozambique but instead should be watchful of the unfolding events day and night, a top police official said.
Speaking at the Manicaland Province belated end of year party that was held last Friday at Golden Peacock Villa hotel, Deputy Commissioner General (Crime) Josephine Shambare urged Zimbabweans to have faith in the Zimbabwe Republic Police members as they have the onerous task of safeguarding a part of Zimbabwe’s border with Mozambique.
DCG Shambare urged members of the police in the province to vigorously and tirelessly utilise crime management strategies and instruments designed to exterminate the malady of crime so as to give full measure of their service to the public.
“I would like to take this opportunity to urge the province to be vigilant at all times and to continue monitoring the unfolding situation in Mozambique following the resurgence of Renamo bandits.
” We have been made to understand that, dialogue between the government and Renamo is in progress and it is our fervent hope that an amicable, peaceful and lasting solution will be achieved soon,” said DCG Shambare.
The police boss in charge of crime confirmed that the force was facing a plethora of challenges to effectively police the province as evidenced by the increase in crime as it recorded 27 739 cases last year, compared to 26 314 cases received in 2012 translating to a 4 percent increase.
“We are aware of the several challenges militating against your efforts to effectively police the province. However we are continuously lobbying government to improve conditions of service of all police officers including the sufficient tools of trade. Policing the world over, does not come cheap as it requires the necessary financial and material resources,”she said.
DCG Shambare applauded the police force in Manicaland province for their sterling performance in reducing crimes of concern such as armed robbery by 37 percent, robbery 21 percent, stocktheft by 5percent and rape of adults by 23 percent.
The ZRP Manicaland province belated end of year party which was characterised by drinking and merry making was attended by senior police officers, their spouses and other stakeholders.
