ZHRL wins case against the harassment of people at roadblocks for employment letters and ID.

HARARE, Zimbabwe.(News of the South) -Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights lawyer Mr. Obey Shava won a historic case yesterday against unconstitutional roadblocks mounted by the security forces throughout the country.

By Antonnate S. Mugodi

People are being asked to produce IDs and letters from employers before being allowed to proceed with their journeys.

They are being  harassed and asked to go back home simply because they did not have employment letters.

The court ruled in his favour and agreed with him that it is unconstitutional to demand letters and IDs on roadblocks as people must move freely.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his address to the nation, said that people are allowed to go by their business during the day and should be allowed to move as per their will as long as they follow the new lockdown measures put forward last week.

The court also noted that the police had no power to make any laws or regulations, theirs is to enforce existing laws.

The requirement to produce letters and IDs is not part of any existing laws and it’s repressive therefore they are not allowed to ask for those items at any roadblocks.
