Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, ZERA, this week published a notice that criminalises storage and selling of LP Gas at home and undesignated points.
The country’s energy regulator issued the notice which stipulated that LPGas could nolonger be stored in homes or sold at undesignated points , an issue that could regularise the market but leave many families without an income.
LP Gas selling points have arguably grown to become one major vending venture as township corners are filled with sellers of the alternative energy source.
However, following futuristic environmental adoptions by private players like Econet’s, DPA who recently launched an electric vehicle charging system, the call could mean well to formally adapting best energy management practices.
The ZERA notice stipulates that the storage and selling of LPGas within a home set up is not allowed and incacerable.
“The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority would like to warn people selling LPG in homes that this is an extremely dangerous activity and is illegal. Those doing it will be persecuted.”
The notice also calls for a collaborative approach by residents in notifieng the regulator on people who are selling and storing
“In the interest of public safety ZERA advices consumers to i. report anyone selling LPG from Thier homes to ZERA giving details including the location and arrest.”
With cases of home and industrial fire being constantly reported, the move can be thought as critical in decreasing the number of properties that are reported burnt.
The move by the regulator further brings a proffesional approach to energy retailing which at time is harzadous, despite bearing a significant impact in relation to Community employment and livelihoods.
LPGas usage in Zimbabwe increased in the last year’s owing to the ever continuing load shedding patterns that pushed Zimbabweans to utilise the non renewable energy source.
The move could be a further positive move by government towards environmental best practices as we seek to realise the ordeals of Agenda 2063 and the Paris Agreement.
