Harare, Zimbabwe (News of The South) – A document originating from the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and obtained by News of the South indicates the party’s recommendation for traditional leaders to conduct national rituals at Matopos and Great Zimbabwe Monuments. The document, dated August 2, 2024, is addressed to Cde F.A. Chikowo, Chief Director for Traditional Leadership in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
The letter specifically recommends Mr. Timothy Chiminya, identified as Mambo Munhumutapa (ID: 59-117450-X-07), along with three other traditional leaders: Mr. Masimba Rubatika (ID: 63-112842-P-25), Mr. Claudious Nyashanu Choga (ID: 63-1616855-8-27), and Mr. Amos Jacha (ID: 07-181185-K-07).
The document, signed by Cde Dr. C. Marisa, Director of Local Government, Devolution, and Housing, formally requests clearance or referral letters for these leaders to carry out the rituals. The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has not yet issued an official statement regarding this matter.
This development highlights the ongoing significance of traditional leadership in Zimbabwe and the potential collaboration between the ruling party and traditional authorities in matters of national cultural and historical importance. The Matopos and Great Zimbabwe Monuments hold immense cultural and historical value, making the involvement of traditional leaders in national rituals particularly noteworthy.
The Munhumutapa Kingdom, which existed from around the 15th to the 17th centuries, held considerable influence over a vast territory in Southern Africa, including much of present-day Zimbabwe and parts of Mozambique. The title of Munhumutapa carries substantial cultural and historical weight.
It is important to note that the document’s authenticity is assumed based on the information available.
