Nottingham, UK (News of The South) – May 23, 2025 – The historic return of Zimbabwe to English Test cricket after 22 years has been ignited by a remarkable century from 21-year-old Brian Bennett, who defied England’s formidable attack on Day 2 at Trent Bridge. His blistering 139-run knock, the fastest Test century by a Zimbabwean, has injected vibrant energy into a fixture already brimming with emotional significance for the visiting nation.

The scenes at Trent Bridge have been nothing short of spectacular, with a passionate and colourful Zimbabwean contingent turning out in force, their cheers echoing through the ground as Bennett dismantled the English bowling. This outpouring of support underscores the deep desire within Zimbabwe for their team to not only compete but to thrive on the international stage once more.

Resuming on 498/3 after a dominant Day 1, England declared their first innings early on Day 2 at 565/6. Ollie Pope added just two runs to his overnight score of 169, while captain Ben Stokes, making his much-anticipated return to bowling after a lengthy injury layoff, contributed 9 runs before being dismissed by Blessing Muzarabani. Harry Brook then swiftly added 58 runs, pushing England’s total beyond the 550-mark.

However, the day truly belonged to Brian Bennett. Facing a daunting total, the young opener displayed immense courage and talent, taking the fight to England’s bowlers. He reached his hundred in a mere 97 balls, an astounding feat that etched his name into Zimbabwean cricket history. His innings was peppered with audacious strokes, keeping the Trent Bridge crowd on their feet and demonstrating the fearless spirit that has characterized Zimbabwe’s fighting return to the top tier.

While Bennett was dropped on 89, a moment of fortune he capitalised on with three successive boundaries to reach his century, his innings was largely one of composure and clean hitting. He found some support from captain Craig Ervine (42) and later Sean Williams and Tafadzwa Tsiga, but ultimately Zimbabwe were bowled out for 265, trailing England by 300 runs.

England’s bowling efforts were spearheaded by the returning Ben Stokes, who wasted no time in making an impact. In a sensational spell, Stokes picked up two crucial wickets, including the dangerous Sikandar Raza and Wessly Madhevere, showcasing his trademark aggression and control. Debutant Sam Cook also claimed his maiden Test wicket, while Shoaib Bashir chipped in with two wickets, including Ervine.

At the close of play on Day 2, Zimbabwe, having been asked to follow on, faced a renewed challenge, ending the day on 6/1. The day’s events have undoubtedly added a compelling narrative to this historic Test. While England remains in a commanding position, Brian Bennett’s inspiring century has reminded the cricketing world of Zimbabwe’s enduring spirit and the talent within their ranks, ensuring that this long-awaited return to England is far from a one-sided affair. The anticipation for Day 3, and what Zimbabwe can achieve next, is palpable.
