(News of The South) – A high-level delegation of the World Council of Churches (WCC) is in the southern African country on a social-justice mission.

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) is hosting this visit by the WCC. The WCC will be looking into the issues of gender-based violence and femicide, as well as incidents of violence toward foreign nationals.

Today the WCC met with the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, at the Lakes Hotel in Benoni where they held a closed door meeting.
Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko said, “the meeting went very well. The President appreciated the initiative taken by the World Council of Churches to seek to engage with South Africans on issues of what they call social-justice.”

Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana who is the general-secretary of SACC said the recent months have been very gloomy for South Africa.

“South Africa has been in the headlines of the global media in recent months over the scourge of gender-based violence, femicide and attacks on foreign nationals.

The WCC have heard and wish to hear from us and various stakeholders how we see the situation and what we are doing about it, so that they can accompany us in any efforts we may be making,” said the Bishop.

The social-justice mission by the WCC will end on the 12th of December 2019.
