(News of The South) – Organisation’s, Businesses, leaders and Governing bodies this week commemorated World Women’s day with multiple commendations and reccomendations to the plight of women.
World Women’s day is part of the broader women’s month commemorations, held on 8th day of March and was this year celebrated under the theme, “Choose To Challenge”.
Other bodies took the time to call for more specific actions that warrantied women’s rights and the constant call to equity and equality.
Human Rights Forum in one of its round up tweets towards world women’s day argued for consideration of a Women Secretary General to the United Nations, perhaps the largest leadership call to action 2021 faces.
Closer to home in Zimbabwe, there were calls for the alignment of local legislation to global treaties related to women affairs and thier ratification.
The first lady of Zimbabwe, Auxillia Mnangagwa commended the existent success story towards championing women’s rights as experienced in Zimbabwe through loan success, figures of women in business among other success.
“233,12m has been disbursed by the bank of Zimbabwe Bank of Empowerment Initiative’s, 46% of Zim High Court Judges are women, 57% of medium to small businesses operating in Zimbabwe are run by women.” read the three Twitter placards the Zimbabwean first Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa raised on Twitter.
Calls to action were made by African representative’s.
“I went to Mpilo Hospital to visit a young girl who lost her leg in a land mine accident in Hwange. I will help the courageous young girl with some of her medical and rehabilitation needs upon discharge.” Legislator, Philanthropist and Bulawayo Business man RajModi tweeted.
Other development agencies took to a broad variety of programs that sought to take the initiative of women’s rights centrestage.
Plan International took to social media through, a partnership with Instagram, under the hashtag Girls Get Equal Listening Sessions which they dubbed the most prominent social media campaign in the development sector.
“The #GirlsGetEqual Listening Sessions have given girls themselves a say in how to make online safety a reality. It’s exciting to see some of the world’s most influential social media platforms listening to girls and taking action so girls are #FreeToBeOnline #IWD2021″ the major development aid initiative said on social media.”
With social media having taken centrestage in the last decade and further enhanced by Covid induced lockdowns globally hindering physical distancing, a successful social media campaign would best cut the social distance on the trajectories, mutually shared and repressive women issues.
Women Rights issues remain a topical terrain in Southern Africa as radical feminist ideologies bloom despite the partriachal nature of culture.
