Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)-About 40% of Zimbabwean women who suffer abuse from their husbands believe that they deserve to be abused for their wrongdoing.
This was revealed by a research done by Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) and presented to the media recently.
According to the results “40 percent believe that they deserve to be beaten if they anger their husbands in any way”, it said.
Among some of the reasons which some women believe warrants their being beaten are neglecting children and refusing to have sex.
This belief has been ascribed to be a result of the patriarchal nature of the African society which has for long regarded the female being as a secondary citizen.
MSF urged for an educational approach to the issue which will seek to change societal views of the female by changing educational content.
The research results also stated that psychosocial support is still lacking for many victims who want to report their cases to the responsible authorities.
“For those adults that want to report their being raped there is still a lack of psychosocial support in the country”.
Women have continued suffering the most in cases of sexual violence though cases involving indecent assault, which is the raping of man, have also gained prominence of late.
