(News of The South) – We don’t live in a vacuum; we live in a world full of people. And these people may help us get where we want to go, and we just might be the one helping the out. That’s just life, without the circle of people around each and every one of us, we will all be empty. We all need people in our lives, for different reasons of course.

I remember back when I was in Bulawayo, my first year there, I helped out my landlord on some problem she had. When she came over to thank me for what I had done for her, I told her that was the reason God had made so many people here on earth, so that we could help each other out. That was just my way of trying to play down the thank you speech she had been throwing at me, for an old lady thanking a young guy, it felt so awkward to me. Over the 3 years we stayed together, she was good to me that I thought I belonged at her house, it felt like a second home.

Sometimes we overlook the people around us, viewing them as competition, enemies or classifying them in some other way to distance ourselves from them. It may be good or it may be bad, only time can tell, but whatever our personal convictions towards them, there may come a time when we need them in our lives.

We all want to amount to something. We have dreams, goals and aspirations, mountains to conquer. But we can’t do it all alone, we need help, we need people.

The late Louis Khan, an American architect once said, “Even a brick wants to be something.” We are all bricks in this world, and we all want to be something. But a brick on its own will never build a house, it won’t amount to something. One brick will never be called a complete built structure; it will always be a brick. It will only be something when it combines with other bricks and form a structure that will be of value and purpose to others.

It may be a good thing going solo, unhindered by others on our way to the success, but it won’t work every time. Many people have taken the phrase, ‘too many cooks will spoil the soup’ too far. It’s not every situation that you are supposed to go alone, sometime you need someone to show you the way and walk with you. You don’t know everything.

I used to love mathematics back in school, and I remember problem questions where you will be asked how long it would take a number of people to do a certain amount of work, and the answer always varied with the number of people. More people meant less time would be required to do the work and vice versa.

The same applies in your life, the things you may be trying to do in your life that may be taking you a lifetime to accomplish may just need an extra pair of hands to get them done sooner. There are tasks that don’t require other people’s input but other task may need many people working from various angles.

There is the famous song by Lucky Dube, the late South African reggae musician called Just the way it is, in which he says, “You meet the same people on your way to the top as you meet on your way down.” People will always be there around you, whether you work with them or not.

Just because you are supposed to blend in with others doesn’t mean you won’t be seen and that you won’t amount to anything. My favourite TV character, Hank Moody said, “Don’t just be another brick in the wall.” You can still shine and be seen even among other people, just because you are part of a structure don’t mean you are invisible.

People don’t want to join with others because they are more afraid about who will outshine the other. In the end it’s all about playing your position, and playing it well. It doesn’t matter what others do, as long as you have done your job well then everything will be ok. People can still outshine you while you are working separately.

Find people to work with, you can’t do it all by yourself. We all need help, we all need people, and sometimes the people we need are the same people we overlook every day. Take a chance, trust someone, maybe they are just waiting for you to make the first move, they may have something good in store for you already. You won’t know this until you put yourself out there, besides, what else you got to lose.
