Los Angeles, United States Of America. (News of The South) – A Zimbabwean nurse based in Los Angeles Melisa Goto is appealing for sponsorship to travel to Guatemala where she plans to volunteer to improve peoples health and lifestyle.

“I am lucky and blessed in that I work in first class facilities that allow me to help improve peoples health and lives each and ever.  Many countries of the world are not so lucky, so this year I have committed to taking unpaid leave to volunteer my services to help those who are less fortunate” said Goto.

Melissa and a team of other healthcare professionals will be travelling to Guatemala in May 2016 for a week to work in the Peri-operative area where different types of surgeries will be performed on both children and adults in need. These clinics are charity funded and rely heavily on both volunteers and contributions to be able to provide life changing services to less fortunate people.

Guatemala is considered to have extreme income inequality among Latin American Countries. Half of Guatemala’s 14 million people live in poverty, having less than $2 USD per day. In addition, Guatemala is home to 23 indigenous Mayan groups, each with their own language. Poverty weighs more heavily on this population, three quarters of the indigenous population lives in poverty. The majority of Guatemalans have basically no access to healthcare.

“I hope that by being able to go on this medical mission, my input will play a part in improving health and lives of those in need. This will mean a lot to me and will make a huge-huge difference to those in Guatemala who, without these clinics and volunteers, would not get the help and treatment that they so desperately require” she said.

Melissa is looking to raise money to help towards funding her mission trip expenses.

“It would be incredible if your generosity would help me achieve this goal. I would really appreciate anything that you can give to help this worthy cause”.
