Poverty is at the doorsteps of many urban Zimbabwean residents in Mabvuku high density suburb of Harare who rely on urban farming as their farming land and other reserved wetlands have fallen under the evil hands of local brick moulders.

The increase in rate of unemployment in the suburb of Mabvuku and Tafara have led to many school leavers joining brick moulders in a move to curb the increase in demand for bricks which has forced brick moulders to risk the reserved wetlands and residents farming land.

According to the Environment Management Act on Environment and Degradation, anyone found guilty of land degradation shall be liable to a fine or imprisonment or both.

Surprisingly it has been 2 years now and no action has been taken on culprits who continue to damage the environment and add poverty to the residents.

Contacted for comment, the Environment Africa Communications officer Sandra Gobvu, says she was not even aware of the acts and so was the same response from the Environment Management Agency offices.

Soil is earth’s fragile skin that anchors all life on earth and when degraded wetlands become less able to hold onto.
