The Ugandan army has recalled ex soldiers who will be deployed to fight against the notorious al- Qaeda linked al Shabaab terrorists in Somalia.

A total of 2200 former soldiers will take part in the mission which includes army veterans, retired soldiers, reserve forces, local defence units and members of the auxiliary forces such as Amuka and Arrow Boys in Northern and eastern regions.

Lt Telesphor Turamumanya spokesperson for the UPDF said the recruitment was meant to beef up security in Somalia in early 2014.

Veterans will be chosen from those below 47 years old and who were ranked as lietenants at the time they retired.

A discharge certificate, a letter of recommendation from local council authorities and should be physically and mentally fit are some of the requirements.

“Army deserters and those dismissed with disgrace will not be considered. Successful candidates will undergo refresher training at the Peace Support Operations Training School in Singo,” said Lt Turamumanya.

Uganda deployed police officers to supervise in the recent presidential elections in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

Uganda has the highest number of troops in Somalia followed by Kenya, Burundi and Djibouti who make up the African Union peace keeping mission.

A total of 7000 soldiers make up the troops and the UN has since agreed for the numbers to increase in a bid to cover other regions in Somalia.
