The United African National Council(UANC) has come guns blazing over
the appointment of former CIO boss as minister for justice.
Speaking at a press conference in the Harare on Thursday, the opposition party’s leader Dr Nesbert Mtengezanwa said the assigning of Happyton Bonyongwe to lead the justice ministry smacks of attempts to interfere with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission(ZEC).
“The harmonized elections are close and our worry is about the date but the impartiality of ZEC when it falls directly under the ministry of justice which has been taken over by the former CIO boss.
“So all the electoral reforms demands we have been agitating for might not see the light of the day,” Mtengezanwa forecast.
The party also took a veiled attack on President Robert Mugabe ‘s directive that vendors selling on undesignated sites be cleared off the streets.
“The recent statement by the president that the streets should be cleaned of vendors is unfortunate given the high levels of unemployment currently obtaining in this country,” said the UANC
leader.
The opposition leader said the recent cabinet reshuffle was a ‘recycle’ as most of the appointees were the same old faces who have failed in their old portfolios.
UANC says the country does not need elections at this juncture but a
transitional government to steer the economic recovery.
“I remind president Robert Mugabe that this country at the moment need
no election but a transitional government that will lead to economic
rebound and spear-head the re-alignment of laws in the new constitution,” proposed Dr Mtengezanwa.
The former Bishop-Muzorewa led-party last year petitioned president Robert Mugabe to act on a plethora of demands but the letter has not been responded to and it is continuing to pester the old leader for a response. The old opposition party has also distanced itself from a grand coalition.
