Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) As Zimbabweans mourn the loss of music superstar Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi who passed away in Harare on Wednesday fellow musician who also happens to be Tuku’s homeboy Hondoyedzomba David aka “HD” said he will “carry forward Tuku’s music”.
Speaking to News of The South on Friday Hondoyedzomba said: “Yes we are home boys we share same culture in music from bindura mash central that’s why my music has a few similarities with blah Tuku”.
Hondoyedzomba is one of the artists who will perform at the Tuku Memorial Concert to he held at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday. “Tuku’s death has left me feeling challenged to carry on that mature afro jazz sound that originated from mash central, Tuku taught me to put my name and originality first saying always put rurimi rwaamai kumberi” he added.
“I performed twice with him wen I was still a budding musician years back in Bindura and Jazz 105 alongside Kireni Zulu at an all solo perfomance negitare show. He is the man behind the stage name “HD “.
Tuku hinted me on how he would introduce himself as Mutukudzi Oliver not Oliver mutukudzi and how much it would make an impact on identity as an African artist even abroad hence the name “HD” meaning Hondoyedzomba David.
The first time Hondoyedzomba performed with Tuku was in Bindura Chipadze stadium with Dr Gwata’s moonlight Promotions alongside Tongai Moyo. It was his first Mash Central concert and marked his coming back to the fans show since his last shows where either international or upmarket.
The second time performing with Tuku was by Josh Hozheri jazz 105 alongside Mukoma Kireni where Hondoyedzomba was the opening act.
Oliver and his side kick picky Kasamba of the black spirits (who is also based in Bindura) were the people behind Hondoyedzomba’s first Harare gig at the then highly profiled Jazz 105 when Oliver Mutukudzi told Josh to give him a gig just like that.
Tuku Memorial Concert will be at the National Sports Stadium from 10am to 6pm and entry is free for all. Other artists to perform include Macheso, Sulumani, Peter Moyo, Baba Mechanic Manyeruke, Zex Manatsa, Alexio Kawara, Jah Prazer, Agatha Murudzwa , Baba naMai Charamba, Jah Signal, Tocky Vibes, Vabati Vajehova, Vabvuwi, St Luke’s, Jeys Marabhini, Bob Nyabinde, Thomas Mapfumo, Nicholas Zechariah and many more.
