Tsvangirai’s Speech: When Man Abuse The Stagnancy Of The Past

Harare, Zimbabwe. (News Of The South) – Whilst we believe the past to be cast in stone, if relayed by someone facing an uncertain future, it has the ability to evolve into something it never was.
The future is the only point of time malleable enough to bend to our whims in the path of life, not the past. The past is a cast iron fact.
The only unfortunate thing is that the past is a stagnant fact never evolving and some man take advantage of its docility to paint it different shades for their convenience.
They also manipulate its stagnant state into forms and shape of their liking.
It’s an irony of time that someone can manipulate the past into something which it never was from the present day. Swiveling through age and, not turning back the clock, but framing it in a different way altogether.
Stating that the wall clock we all knew was a wrist watch.
The stagnancy of the past is not in the absence of motion as in the death of an object but the accepted and known fact of a matter.
We all accept that the liberation struggle happened and we were freed. Some more than others obviously. The stagnancy of this truth is in that the liberation struggle occurred.
No can rise today and say no it never happened. That’s a resolute and stagnant fact of the past.
What is not stagnant and allows for such man as Tsvangirai to take to podiums and manipulate the past is the interpretation of the Who’s, Who was liberated? To what extent were we liberated? Are we really free?
Tsvangirai recently gave a speech to gathered journalists in Harare.
During that event he delivered a statement that framed the past in the said manner.
“I have been meeting Zimbabweans across the country in the past few weeks and they have been telling me that the current crisis and the collapse of basic services are in sharp contrast to the good old days of the MDC in government”.
“They were forthright and honest with me as to their trust and faith in the capacity of this party and this leadership”.
The statement was said in the classic vein of relieving a fabled time of milk and honey that has left us.
However it would be dangerous to allow the MDC-T leader to walk around thinking the 2009 period was some such niche of glory and paradise that is yearned for by many.
In as much as it was a time of respite, mostly due to the coming in of the US dollar and nothing else, 2009 was nothing more than that, a passing shade before the hot journey continues.
What Zimbabweans are pining for today is not some random shade that fell upon our heated heads but the destiny of something definitive and lasting.
A transient respite lulls people into a false dawn and is of no help twenty years from today. The destiny of a fully recovered economy with a functioning industry and an employed population however does the reverse.
It satiates all of us and does not quench our yearnings with wet dreams from a gone erotica but avails the needed.
Nostalgia, which is what drove all those who told Tsvangirai that they yearn for 2009, is a sickly and detrimental emotion that actually derails progress with its overriding fallacy of the best being in the past.
Instead of going around pasting the sickly salad of rumination about his short period in government Tsvangirai should remain focused on the task at hand, which is about fighting for a better future.
A future with a permanent 2009 and not a passing breeze of respite that has left us where we began.
