Tsvangirai’s MDC Aims Gun at Parastatals

Harare, Zimbabwe. (News of The South) -Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change has promised to denationalize most government enterprises and focus on social service delivery after winning the 2018 elections in a move aimed at resuscitating the economy.
In a statement the Morgan Tsvangirai led party says it’s not government duty to focus on business ventures but attention should be given to service delivery.
“For example the Ministry of Transport has 11 parastatals and any government no matter how efficient is unable to run so many parastatals efficiently”.
“The National Railways of Zimbabwe is now a museum, Air Zimbabwe is operating at a loss; ZUPCO is dead and buried, ZINARA is failing to run roads and examples are endless’, it said.
“In all this chaos the worker is the most affected as seen by the massive retrenchments that have taken place”.
‘An MDC government will denationalize and allow for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Private Public Partnerships (PPPs)”.
“FDIs and PPPs will give room for large amounts of investment, efficient administration and employment creation”, it added.
The ZANU PF led government has previously refused to privatize the parastatals with Finance Minister Chinamasa telling the media that they are strategic assets critical to government policy implementation.
Most parastatals are currently technically insolvent and have been a perennial drain on the struggling fiscus whilst many of them have also become synonymous with corruption and looting.
The move envisaged by the MDC is however likely to face stiff challenges from a clique of parastatal heads who have been running some of the companies as personal fiefdoms.
