Malawi (News of The South) In a critical development for Malawian athletes, the Malawi Triathlon Union (MTU) has taken significant steps toward international recognition. However, a roadblock remains: the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has yet to sign affiliation documents with the MTU.
Following the recent Olympics, where Malawian athletes narrowly missed out on medals due to limited participation, the urgency to address this issue has intensified.
The untapped potential of triathlon sport—combining swimming, cycling, and running—could yield continental and international honors. But without MOC’s support, these opportunities slip away.
MTU’s General Secretary Glem Chilomo, speaking at this year’s Triathlon sports event in Mzuzu, emphasized the alignment of triathlon sport with the United Nations’ sustainable development goal number three (3): promoting health and well-being for all.
To achieve this, swift action in signing the necessary documents is a must, to allow Malawian triathletes to compete globally and bring home well-deserved medals,” said Chilomo.
Malawi Olympic Committee’s Secretary General, Henry Sakala, acknowledged receiving the MTU’s application.
“The application will soon be assessed by the Board, the process follows established procedures, including regional committees, nationwide structures, and minimal affiliation fees—standard requirements for any sporting association,” said Sakara.
As the MTU awaits approval, the hopes of Malawian triathletes rest on the timely resolution of this bureaucratic hurdle. Their dreams of representing their country on the international stage hang in the balance.
