Harare Zimbabwe (News of The South) – Following the release of the press statement that spoke of a 50% pay increase for all civil servants and a 75 USD Covid-19 allowance for all the public took to Facebook and Twitter to share their views on this decision made by the government.
“Just pay at least US$50 to the least paid civil servant.
“US$75 you are offering buys only three crates of lion lagers,” commented one man on his twitter handle.
Others showed their concerns for those pensioners in the rural areas:
“How will those pensioners in the rural areas open nostro accounts during this lockdown?”
“How can they be telling us to open nostro accounts, these cost US$20 to open.
“On top of that, you are telling us that you will be rating the money to the current bank rate,” said one of the civil servants as she noted that she does not want what the government has implemented.
“You are just afraid of strikes which will be uncontrollable.
“But for how long are you going to do it, soon you will be in the track.
“Things are hooting up, better reform before it is too late,” said one member of the public.
Many civil servants are saying they do not want this payment in US dollars because with the current bank rate it is just the same as their usual pay.
Also, chances are that they fail to withdraw these US dollars from the bank. Questions have been raised as to what will be done if Covid was to end in the next coming month that will the US$75 Covid-19 allowance be scrapped away.
Instead of easing people up this move by the government has caused unrest and anger.
It has also raised up so much suspicions as it had been said that there was no fuel duo to acute foreign currency shortage then all of a sudden have foreign currency to pay civil servants.
