0 0Harare, Zimbabwe (News of the South)- America’s recently inaugurated 45th President Donald Trump can just easily win the unenviable accolade of the most hated or unpopular leader across the world.
In the first week after his taking the reins of the world’s superpower massive demonstrations have taken place with people protesting his election to one of the most influential positions in world politics.
In that very same week he has had to fight off accusations of falsifying attendance numbers at his inauguration ceremony sparking off a war of words with the press.
During the election race he had to fend off accusations of being a sexist. He was accused of sexually harassing many woman before he became a prominent politician.
Up to now he still faces accusations of being a white supremacist who promised to chuck out Mexicans and ban Moslems from America.
A days after his inauguration address an estimated 2.6 million people took to the streets in protest in different cities that include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston while an estimated 600 demonstrations took place across the world against his leadership.
He has already accused the press of being “amongst the most dishonest human beings on earth”.
Defending his corner his Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has accused various quarters including the media of trying to delegitimize his presidency.
He has refused to avail publicly his tax returns in a move very much against the political norm.
These and the unprecedented media siege to his presidency from even before he won has set the stakes for a bruising first four years for the business mogul not known for any modesty.
For the American population this is the time to wonder about the efficacy of their much vaunted democracy. Does it bequeath the best or simply the winner?
Democracy has previously the given the world Adolf Hitler, the most popular demagogue to grace the globe after massacring millions of Jews.
It has done it again this time giving America and the world Donald Trump a bellicose 17th century remnant who still thinks the world is there for American taking.
The scenes unravelling in the US are a stark reminder that democracy is one unruly Father Christmas who can give you an awkward xmas gift you have no use for.
