(News of The South) -A striking bird, shrouded in mystique and dubbed the “Lamborghini of poultry,” the Ayam Cemani is a rare and coveted chicken breed from Indonesia that has captured the imagination of poultry enthusiasts worldwide. While tales of its otherworldly characteristics and exorbitant prices abound, the reality of this all-black chicken is both fascinating and frequently exaggerated.

Contrary to claims of eggs fetching an eye-watering $2,500 each, the price for a single hatching egg from a reputable breeder is more realistically in the range of $15 to $20 in the United States and comparable prices in the United Kingdom. It is the adult birds themselves that can command high prices, sometimes reaching several thousand dollars, a testament to their rarity and unique appeal.

The Ayam Cemani’s most defining feature is its intense and uniform blackness. This is due to a genetic condition called fibromelanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation. This results in not only black feathers, beak, comb, and wattles, but also black skin, muscles, bones, and internal organs. Even the tongue and nails of this chicken are a stark, glossy black.

However, one of the most persistent myths surrounding the breed is the color of its blood. While it is a very deep and dark shade of red, it is not, as often rumored, black. Similarly, the eggs of the Ayam Cemani are not black but a conventional cream or light tan color.

The breed’s allure and high price tag are a result of a confluence of factors. Its origins trace back to the island of Java in Indonesia, where it holds significant cultural importance and has been used in traditional rituals and medicine for centuries, believed to possess mystical properties. This rich history adds to its exotic appeal.

Furthermore, the Ayam Cemani is a relatively rare breed, and establishing and maintaining a pure bloodline can be challenging for breeders. Their striking appearance makes them a prized ornamental bird for collectors and poultry hobbyists, further driving up demand.

While originating in Indonesia, the Ayam Cemani is no longer confined to its native land. Dedicated breeders have established populations in various countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and other parts of Europe. This global presence has made the “Goth chicken,” as it is sometimes affectionately called, more accessible to a wider audience, though it remains a bird of distinction in the poultry world.

While the Indonesian Ayam Cemani may not lay golden—or black—eggs, its stunning appearance, cultural significance, and relative scarcity ensure its status as one of the most captivating and sought-after chicken breeds on the planet.
