Teachers’ Incapacitation Induced by and can be Resolved by Govt

Lest we forget teachers’ incapacitation emanated from unilateral reduction of their salary pegged at US$520-US$550 before October 2018. That salary was able to send five kids to a boarding school, more so because the fees were low.

Salary Discrepancies whereas teachers received salaries ranging from $11000 to $12000 yesterday, prison officers got salaries ranging from $20000, police officers $21000-$36000, soldiers $22000-$40000, nurses $23000-$37000, directors more than $50000, permanent sec more than $70000. One wonders what crime teachers have committed to deserve this treatment.

With fees pegged between $25000 and $60000 a term, a teacher cannot send one child to a boarding school. Worse still a standard family has four children, and it remains a mystery how gvt expect teachers to educate their own children on such a starvation salary, let alone pay rentals, utility bills, funeral policies and buy food etc.

Henceforth there is no reprieve in the incapacitation of teachers. As much as we know the dangers of being right when gvt is wrong, we reiterate that schools in Zimbabwe are not ready to proceed to the second phase where the grades 4, 5 and 6; forms 3 and L6th should re-open.

As the education officials are touring schools this week teachers must:
-applify their incapacitation by their absence in schools.
-resist salivating at poisoned carrots of incentives from parents
– decist from abusing school premises in conducting private lessons.

We reiterate our readiness to go back to work but only after extensive dialogue with gvt and address of our welfare, health and safety concerns. Defeat is not part of our agenda.
