Coast Region, Tanzania. (News of The South) – Tanzania’s President John Magufuli, cautioned that all Tanzanians should ensure they register their Sim cards biometrically before the 20th of January 2020.
Magufuli said biometric Sim card registration was crucial for the country’s safety and will help in the fight against criminal acts such as conning and theft.
Due to the looming deadline, the Home Affairs’ deputy minister Hamad Masauni, has directed the National Identification Authority (NIDA) to work 16 hours a day to speed up the issuance of national IDs to Tanzanians.
“I have decided to extend the working hours after visiting the department and learnt that it has few staff who work for a short time while there are many citizens in need of the IDs so that they can register their SIM cards,” said the deputy minister.
Last year, the East African’s mobile phone subscriptions rose to 43.67 million out of the 58 million Tanzanians, a 4.7 percent increase from 2018.
The number of internet users rose to 23.14 million up from 22.99 million in 2018. The number of people using mobile money transfers rose to 22.9 million from 20.8 million in 2018.
